Sooner or later we may have no choice on riding around in a computer car.

Speaking for myself I don't trust the technology. True there's technology involved already in cars, planes, boats and trains, but these are under human control. Also I like driving myself around.

I'm sure you can find more pros and cons on riding around in a computer car. So are you ready for a Jetson world?

I'm setting up a poll to see what you think on this topic which will grow in importance. The results should be interesting.

It's still a while off in the future until everyone is riding in a self-driving car. But even when every car can do that, manual driving isn't going to go away. Todays cars will be antiques and will still be on the road, and even new cars will still have a manual drive override.

I agree and will not happen soon. Not in our lifetime. Its a test and technology only.
In answer to your question. NEVER.....

It's interesting information and makes me wonder how traffic courts will assign responsibility in traffic accidents. To stay on-topic, I'm looking for further input from others.

this is why manual driving will never go away... there is to much money to lose from traffic law.

I'm sure computer cars would be safer than some of the drivers I encounter on the roads everyday!

I was at a dealership a while back and the sales guy was giving a demo of a SUV that parks itself and not only was the whole process slow and complicated but he hit one of the other cars on the lot..

If your like me and live/work in a big city and have to parallel park and squeeze thru traffic in a major city/downtown core-- I think I feel better being in complete control of my vehicle..

those are supposed to be pretty good now IIRC and if they were all controlled by a central hub that new the exact dimensions of each car then it could make the process much smoother without red lights and stuff, would be awesome but is either 100 years away or never gonna happen

The thread name and actual question are two very different questions. People like driving too much to give it up completely. I wouldn't say no to it for a long drive that would take a while but just short trips, I like driving. But yeah I wouldn't mind just setting autopilot and taking a nap on long trips. :D

As for feeling safe I won't like it until all cars can communicate with each other very effectively as in

Car 1 - I'm braking, a rogue deer has appeared.
Car 2 - Noted. applying brakes
Car 3 - Oh crap I'm tailgating car 2, better swerve out of the way. :D

Something like that. Obviously they wouldn't tailgate, but still.

Depends if it's running Windows or not :P
Good point.
In any case, I will never purchase a computer-driven car. I don't even like the fact that there are computers controlling the engine and transmission... I'll take a carburetor and a stick any day of the week. Cars with computer-controlled engines are impossible to fix even by us gearheads.

Machines are more intelligent, can react faster and are more accurate. Yes I would feel safe in a computer car. It would take some getting used to but it would be fantastic

think some technology is just a waste of time. Battery car for example. To cold and to small and not spending 40,000 dollars for one. What do you think a computer car would cost? I would like to see them develop one that most people can afford. They are still high in price and unaffordable for a lot of working people. It will be the rich only and a maybe.

Yeah but things are always expensive when they first come out.

I was about to say that myself. So far this survey indicates a mass market won't develop.

If I do surveys in the future, I'll make sure there's a closer tie between the topic title and the survey section to prevent confusion. I was trying to avoid repetition to help keep this thread interesting. Sorry about that.
