thats the exact dos message im getting right after the system hardware startup screen, so any ideas? iv already reset the bios and all that, but i had alot of important stuff on that drive and would show much love if you knew how to fix it!

help!

You can probably recover your data using a live linux CD (knoppix or Meppis, google it) and then just copy and paste onto a drive, then try inserting your windows disk and selecting the repair windows option (if you are using xp), that should just leave all your files on the HDD and you will have a almost fresh install of windows. But if it doesn't work try doing a complete re-install of windows

Knoppix can be a little tricky, i remember when that happened to me and it wouldnt let me copy any files because it said they were protected. I tried numerous things but couldnt get it to work. But you can try knoppix, or you can put the HD in a different computer and copy the files that way.

thanks for the help everyone, i luckily got my files off it and reinstalled windows, but does anyone know why this happened? i mean it seemed fine when i turned it off the night before, because i would love to know how to prevent this

Windows became corrupted somehow or the NTLDR file was deleted. Viruses can do it along with other things (such as people deleting things they shouldn't or installing things they shouldn't).

My bet is NTLDR some was corrupted. I've had it happen...no idea how. Since it couldn't find where the system files were to load windows it told you the boot disc was corrupted. I'm willing to bet running Windows Repair would have resolved it.

Just for future reference, either buy a second HD or partition your current drive and keep all your documents off of the partition/drive windows is installed on. This way, if windows decides to do this again, your documents are safe and you don't have to worry about recovering them.
