writing to encircle a symbol, how?

How would you write in a circular way on one part of a circle then the other tat the bottom part using inkscape or word or gimp?

I don't really understand the question. What did you mean when you said 'tat'?

OK. I think I worked out how to do it in word. Click WordArt > Type what you want and create it > Click on the 'format' tab > Click change shape > Click the circle

I have Word 2007 can get to the format tab bit but can't find the change shape tab anywhere,??
