x-platform compilers

Can anyone suggest any good cross-platform compilers? I'm trying to learn C++ and am probably picking up Python, too, and I'd like to make programs that work on both windows an linux without any modifications to the code ("write once, compile everywhere?"). Also, is there a (free/opensource) Visual Basic equivalent for linux?
 
...anyone?

Also, I've heard Lazarus is "the best" delphi-equivalent for linux. This true or is there anything/something else I should look at?
