X2/fx

What is the difference between AMD X2 and FX? I am thinking about blowing some money on a better chip (rigth now I have a 3500 AMD 64)

The difference is that the FX line has an unlocked multiplier, which should allow you to overclock significantly further than with locked CPU's. The FX60 is also 200Mhz faster than the X2 4800+, and the FX-62 is 400Mhz faster than the X2 4800+. If you arent going to overclock, there really isnt much need for an FX series CPU.

And if you have money to blow, I would spend it on better video cards, better hard drives, and a new sound card.

read his sig [-OMEGA-]
i don't think he needs any more HDDs or Video Cards or a sound card
but he needs a better CPU

I did look at his sig. But if he wants to waste $1000 on a CPU, i would recommend simply getting an X2 4800+ for around $550, and then getting a better video card, such as a 7950GX2.

And when i said more hard drives, i was referring to getting rid of those, and getting a 10K 150GB 16MB Raptor, possibly two in RAID.

yea i didnt think about getting rid of anything....but wise thinking
so Habanerosky....how much money do you wanna spend ?

i think i would just go with the X2 based on OMEGA's explaination of FX. I dont overclock anymore because i fried my board once and had a bad bios flashing experience another time. Ill probably go with the X2 4800 and eventually get some better drives (my arrays are so goddamn confusing as it is); but im really enjoying SLI with the two 7800s, besides i bought those like 4 months ago.

All in all id probably want to spend ~$800 Max (thats a lot when you are in college and make $350 a week :/)

Do you think that upgrading to an X2 thats like 42-4800 would make a big difference in my PC (considering im playing games like FEAR, HL2, and Everquest II)?

I think the upgrade to an X2 4800+ would definitly be worth it. You would see a great increase in performance.

Personally, I would sell the SLI 7800's and get something big like a 7900GTX or the 7950GX2. I dont see any point in buying SLI right off the bat.

Ok, so my price range is th 4200+ becuase im looking into getting what Omega was talking about (the 150gb raptor) would it be big jump from a singlecore 3500?

The X2 4200+ is still an excellent choice, the only difference is that its 200Mhz slower and has lower cache. The performance jump from the 3500+ would be significant, especially in multithreaded games, and in multi-tasking enviornments.

I don't think theres really much point In buying any expensive Graphics card Right now, seing as DX10 is on the way, and will not be backwards compatible with DX9 cards, and Can only be used with Vista an all that..
Could be a big waste of money if you did decide to spend a lot on a card!

DirectX 10 isnt going to be released for a while, so it's not something you want to use as a reason not to buy a nice video card now. However I wouldnt recommend him upgrading his video cards right not, since his stil perform extremely well. The only reason i suggested him upgrade his video cards was because from his original post, it sounded like he wanted to blow alot of money on things he really didnt need

And if you look at the previous posts, he said he was going to upgrade his processor and hard drive only, not the video card.
