Xbox 360 & Router

I got an email from a friend of mine asking about setting up an Xbox 360 with a router and I know nothing about it. The email is posted below, any suggestions?

My boyfriend got his kids an Xbox 360 for Christmas and they want to play on line. So he bought a router. We can not get it set up for some reason. I didn't know if you know anything about that stuff. We can make a connection but we keep getting a failed signal on the Xbox that the IP address is wrong. Should both the router and Xbox have the same IP address so they recognize each other?

You just plug the 15 foot Ethernet cable that came with the 360 into a free port in the back of the router. But if your router is in a different spot, they sell wireless things that hook into the back of your 360 and detect wireless signals. I think they are $70 or $80.
