No, Microsoft specifically designed their wireless network adapter for the Xbox 360 ONLY. What I mean by only is, the xbox 360 is pre-installed with the drivers for the adapter so all you have to do is plug it in and configure it.
If you try to use any other adapter, you will get no response, as with all wireless adapters, you need to install the drivers for them. The Xbox 360 WILL NOT download any drivers from a disk that comes with your after-market adapter.

Yeah, its just another way Microsoft gets some more money out of you 
Another option is to wirelessly get the ethernet to the xbox another way (not really sure how to phrase it). What im referring to is something like http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Play-Link/dp/B0006FQ50I But I have no experience with them and it looks like they might not even still make them.
Id say the m$ adapter is your best bet but you could try to look into something like the link play.

While most any other USB network adapter would "technically" work, the Xbox doesn't have the software to support it. Thus Microsoft forces you to purchase their wifi card
However, it would be possible to get something like an access point or router and configure it as a "wireless card" of sorts...

DD-WRT is like steriods for routers. Hence the reason i still use my 6-7 year old WRT54G Revision 1.1
(The newest ones are like version 8 or 8.1 i believe)

I searched around a bit, and this seems to be the best solution. Any DD-WRT compatible router can be used, so now I will just find a good deal on one.
