Ok guys, my xp machine boots and goes to the windows logo. After this point the screen goes black and stays black for about a minute or so. Xp then goes to the login screen.
I have done all the usual things; chdisk, antivirus, sfc /scannow, defrag, registry clean up, but it still does the same thing.
One weird thing is that I opened the system cleaned it out and in the process disconnectd everything. This however did resolve the problem for the first boot after all that. but now its back to normal. What should I do?

If you can start then try to restore the computer to earlier date. If you can't then reboot and tap the 'F8' key and start in safe mode then try.

goto start, programs, accessories and system tools.

I can start perfectly fine but I cannot restore because of the data settings I have on the system.

The problem really only is that the system takes a minute to start up. Thats all.

What do ya mean i can't 'but I cannot restore because of the data settings I have on the system.'

What about going to start, run 'msconfig' then the start up folder. Find out what you can uncheck. Reboot and see if that helps. (note: you can always go back to msconfig and check it.
Keep what ya need. virus etc.

What I meant is applications that where installed on the system (back office software). Anyway, I disabled evrything in start-up and services and still the same thing. Obviously I didn't disable the total essential windows services. So what now?

Boot to safe mode, uninstall the video driver, reboot but don't allow the driver to be installed. You most likely will have to uninstall video driver software in add/remove programs. If the screen doesn't go black then you have a video driver issue.
