Im doing a clean install of windows xp on my comp and after It boots with the boot disc I select boot with cd rom support. After I get the dos prompt I type c: to get the c: prompt. Then I type setup to activate the winxp disc and I get "cdr101:not ready reading drive E abort, retry, so on and so forth. so what can I do to get winxp to install.

Are you using a standard windows CD? If so...set your BIOS to boot to CD before hard drive, and when you have the Win XP cd in on boot, it should boot up. Command prompt should never be involved, nor should a boot disk.

Oh, and are you sure you are using a full version of XP and not the UPGRADE package which requires Windows 98 to be installed on your computer?

Also another problem here is in the DOS promt your typing setup on C but the setup file is not on C! its on you Cd drive assigned letter (probaly D or E)

Ideally the disk will be a startup disk, but you may have to get a boot disk that will enable your CD drive and you'll have to do the DOS thing, but it will work as long as you get the correct drive letter for your drive.

To find a boot disk, if you need one, just google the phrase "windows xp boot disk" this will bring up some pages to find a boot disk creator.
