XP: Files in My Documents changed to .txt

So I booted up my desktop the other day, and I had a bunch of Excel and Word documents located in My Documents, now all of the files have changed to .txt files. None of them will open up, so I tired to open them in Wordpad, and it is all code.
I have no idea how this happened. Does anyone know how to fix it?

I also went into my pictures folder, and all of those are fine and still open.

Please help.

Go to tools -> folder options -> view and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types." Now remove the .txt from the filenames.

Now this might be a dumb question, but once I click on “Hide extensions for known file types”, do I have to go into My Documents and select all of the files that way and delete the .txt? Or do I delete the .txt somewhere in the tools section of My Docs?
