XP Goes black before login screen

Hello.

For quite some time now i've had a pretty annoying problem with a computer (look at bottom for specs):
When i start up Windows XP (SP2), the screen goes black before entering the login screen.

This happends at a random rate though. Sometimes the computer start up beautifully, other times it just goes black.

I format my computer quite often, and after some months I found out that I passed this problem with a special Windows XP SP2 CD I had.
In this edition I had Windows Updated turned off from the start, since that stopped me from hitting these problems (tried same edition with this on).

Now I need to pass on this computer to a family member of mine. I formatted the computer and put on an older Windows XP on (total legal ofcourse), and now I get these problems again.

I doubt it's the hardware, simply because I can avoid the problem with software managing. At the same time I find it really strange, and I need to solve this problem.
Also, I lived with system restoration for some time. Here i restored every time I started my computer, and then it worked.

I think it's Windows that has some funny updates that really dosn't like my computer. Can anyone please help?

Thanks :)

Cookey problem you got there... tried replacing the video card? or maybe upgrade or downgrade the drivers?

i know this kind of goes against what you think it might be.... but it cant hurt...
