XP Home registry problem

My HP software became corrupted. I tried to dump it and reinstall but can only get a partial installation. HP ran me through all the scrubber routine but it did no good. Local techs tell me it is in the registry and they spend all day cleaning HP out so they can reinstall. HP says I have to talk to MS about registry problems. I understand the perils of messing with the registry, but really need to fix this problem. I have a fresh HD and could move data there, leave XP, format, and then reinstall XP. Any ideas? Specifically, can anyone tell me how to clean HP out of my registry without killing my OS? Thanks.

Hmm, it will probably get pretty sticky trying to completely get rid of HP without leaving things a bit unstable. If you say you can move your data and reinstall XP fresh, then I would do that. Depending on how many programs and drivers you would need to reinstall, it might be a pain in the butt, but for stability purposes, it might be the way to go instead of investing too much time into fixing something that might not get fixed all that well. HOWEVER, you could try going back to a previous restore point (if you have any) and see if that fixes the problem first.

I always recommend having one partition for OS files and programs only. And place My Documents, My Pictures, My Music etc.. on another partition(s). That way if anything ever goes wrong with your OS, you can just reformat THAT partition and reinstall the OS without worrying about your files. However, even in that case, it is always best to back-up your important data onto a CD, DVD, or a USB drive - just in case.
