XP home versus pro

I came to the conclusion that my comp needs a fresh install and I now have the problem of having to load XP professional edition when my system originally had XP home edition. The disc for home edition has been lost for sometime now. I just read some other threads that say Pro is better by a long shot. I do a lot of media orientated things on my computer, would the difference be too drastic for me and would my comp still support XP PRO?

Actually, there are very little differences between home and pro, none that will affect you. Go ahead with the install, you'll be fine.

Though if his license is for XP home he will not be able to install XP Pro with that license.

Thing is I DO NOT have the disc for home edition. I have one for Pro and I have a product key for it. I got this CD through school, Being enrolled in this particular class we had access to free software. Now the problem is I can't get the CD to boot. I talked to a friend and we concluded that this copy wasn't bootable. If I were to format the hard disc drive would it still not work?

I'm assuming he has a key for Pro. If he doesn't, then that may obviously be an issue, although I would still try and activate the pro install with the home license. It's worth a shot.

EDIT: Just read post #5... nevermind. :P

What happens when you attempt to boot the disk? Do you have your optical drive (CD/DVD drive) set to boot first in the BIOS?

Yeah I made sure of that. I left it alone for awhile and when I started up the computer it magically booted from the disc. It's like it picks and chooses when it wants to start up! I don't get it!

So did you get it installed?

No not yet. I want to do a clean install but I'm worried about the drivers. I don't have discs for them either.

Is it a pre built machine, like a Dell or HP? If so, you can usually download the drivers from their support site. If you have the model name and number, post it and we can help you find the drivers.

Now would I have to download the drivers prior to the clean Install or could I do it once I get the OS up and Running?

If you can, download everything before you install the OS. You can put everything on a USB flash drive or external hard drive. At the very least, download the network driver so you have access to the internet after you install the OS. Windows will install generic drivers for most of the other devices.
