I just formated a 10,000 rpm sata western digital raptor drive. It is working perfectly. I hook it up to my other computer, check that it is properly atached, and procede to try to install windows. I get a message that says:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit, press F3.

What do I need to do to get windows running? Please help.

I've seen a few different solutions, depending on your motherboard. Some, you have to install RAID drivers. As you start the XP install, you should see a prompt about this. They are usally provided on a floppy with your motherboard.

Another solution I saw recently, one of them computers I built had a RAID and IDE drive mode(or something like that) When running in IDE(yes, this was for SATA drives) you didn't need any special drivers or anything to make XP detect the drives.

Okay. Do you always need to install drivers for hard drives? Where might I find these drivers?

My motherboard: asus a7n8xe delux

As far as I know, just floppies. I beleive that's the only place windows will look for the drivers... Hopefully someone else can correct me :-/

are you setting up a raid array of some kind? if not, i don't see a need for raid drivers. i've never had to install any drivers just to install a hard drive. are you installing this with another drive, or by itself? if you are replacing a drive, and going from an ide to a sata, it's just a bios setting.

My western digital 7200 160 gig sata stopped loading the os. I backed up the files on it and formated it. It always given me trouble, so I decided to format a 35 gig sata western digital 10,000 rpm raptor drive and use it for the os. (Works perfectly). I am not trying to set up a raid array. Just trying to teach myself how to install an os, with great difficulty. It says it doesn't detect the drive, but the cables are all right. I am stumped. I tried ghosting the hd of my other computer, but that didn't work either.

kick ass man. I think that must be what's going on with it. Only problem is, I have no floppy drive. I must buy one. I don't know if they still sell them. They must. Would ghosting work?
