What exactly is the Media Center Edition of windows XP? How does it compare to XP Pro? I have the following options for the Media Center Edition what do they all mean?

XP Media Center edition:
  • With USB Mini Media Center Remote Control [+$15
  • With Media Center Remote Control [+$30
  • With USB Mini Media Center Remote Control and Single NTSC TV Tuner +$70
  • With Media Center Remote Control and Single NTSC TV Tuner +$80
  • Without Remote Control or TV Tuner

Are you running or buying a prebuilt system there? The MCE version of XP came out in 2005 with multimedia as the focus there instead of just having Windows Miedia Plaiyer. Vista now comes with a builtin option to setup it's own Media Center. The options seen there point to an addin tv tuner card with the software package as well as just having an rc for a send/receive sensor plugged into a usb oort like infrared or rf there.

it's for a laptop im customizing then buying. So if I don't want the TV tuner (too expensive for something I don't need) basically the only thing it gives is a remote? Which would be the first option or second? What's the difference?

aside from that additonal software is their any difference between XP Pro and XP Media Center Edition? because the XP Pro version is 50$ more than the Media Center Edition...

bump, the only thing that's holding be back is the operating system...XP Pro or Media Center Edition?! Pro is 50$ more but I'm afraid Media Center might not have all the features that Pro has...input?

XP Pro is only $30 more than Media Center Edition at Newegg!!!!. I would just get the pro version.

Those options are all XP MCE, but with different options that you can choose. Unless you need the TV tuner or remote, I wouldnt get them.

And XP MCE is a mix between Home and Pro. It offers some of the advantages of XP Pro that Home doesnt offer, and it has the media center program which is great if you're building an HTPC.

I really don't care about the media center thing but I just wanted to save some money. I was worried if I got the cheap Media Center Edition, which is 50$ less than Pro (on alienware's site), I would miss out on some of the features of Pro...

How much are you seeing XP Pro listed for? How about a full version of XP Pro for as little as $79.95. http://www.buysoft.biz/detail.php?id=2

For multimedia and gaming I generally give the Home version the edge over Pro. The other main difference between the Home and Pro editions is that you will notice MS dos files at the root of C as part of the backward support the Pro edition offers for logging onto older networks.

The only time those dos files are seen when running the Home version is when multibooting Vista and XP Pro along with it like currently being done here at the moment. The Vista installer duplicated those files on the Home primary when adding Pro to the boot information there.

wow I didn't unerstand any of that....

I'm choosing an OS for an alienware I'm building and the only options are Vista, XP Pro, or XP Media Center edition. I really don't want Vista because it says that with Vista I can only run 1 graphics card at a time and my lappy is going to have dual cards. Media Center edition is basically the same price as Vista (1$ less) but XP Pro is 50$ more. It doesn't really say how much Media center or vista are because they are included in the base price, it only shows how much it is to upgrade to XP Pro or to Vista Ultimate.

so they don't actually offer XP Home. All they have is the Media Center Edition or XP Pro. Which is better in your opinion? What are the advantages/drawbacks to both for gaming or for just general usage.

do not get windows media center edition its not worth it for all the stuff you can do because more and more problems arise and i cant find any info on how to fix them

Too bad you couldn't order without any OS and simply shop around for an OEM full version of Windows not the OEM type included with prebuilds but where you can upgrade your case later. Without the retail carton and the large paperbook you can save quite a bit. That allows you to choose just what you want for an OS. Alienware is also known for being overpriced in many ways. That's something else to consider there for a custom build.
