xp - my computer display

I am using XP ver 2002 w/ Ser Pac 2. My comp is a DELL Demension 2350.

I just installed a WDC 40GIG hard drive and a HP G4050 Scanner.

The new drive and the scanner do not show up on the "MY COMPUTER" page.

The new drive shows up in DEVICE MANAGER and it says it is working properly. The scanner does not show in DEVICE MANAGER.

The scanner works as advertised.

I can't write to the new drive or display any thing about it.

I have other drives installed A is a floppy drive, D and E are CDR and DVR drives, G is a removeable drive. There is no B or F drive installed.

What goes here? What can I do?

You have to format the hard drive.

I imagine WDC stands for Western Digital, so Click Here to download WD LifeGuard Tools to format your drive and get it working! :)
 
Right click on My Computer, go to Manage, local drives and settings(or something like that, I'm not on an XP maachine right now :P) Assuming everything's configured correctly in the BIOS and all, you should see it there. Right-click on the bar and partition(if required) then assign a drive letter.

By default, I think most BIOS's are set to automatically search for new hard drives upon boot. If you don't see the drive in computer management, it's probably not searching for the drive. I think to get into the bios on most Dell's, you press CTRL-F2, or maybe just F2, it changed over the years, but should say as it boots on the Dell screen. Find the interface you connected it to(Primary Slave, perhaps? Or is it SATA?)

If it's not showing up or detectable in the BIOS, be sure the jumpers are set correctly. If it's IDE, you'll need to set it to Master/Slave, or maybe even Cable Select (some dells require this) If it's SATA, check the speed of you're interface. If it's only SATA150, you may need to set a jumper on the drive accordingly.
 
Thanks so much for the help. Right clicking on MY COMPUTER did it for the hard drive.

Now how about my scanner HP G4050 not showing as a device or on the MY COMPUTER page
 
Did you load the drivers for the scanner, in device manager there listed most of the time under Imaging devices.

The driver was loaded during the software install. The scanner works as advertised it just doesn't show up in MY COMPUTER or DEVICE MANAGER.
