XP Network Setup Issues

I have two desktop computers, a Netgear router, and a DSL modem. I am trying to create a wired network so I can share files and folders between the two desktops. I also want to share a printer and internet access.

I ran the XP network setup, nogo. Neither computer could see the other Shared folders (or computer). I ran the network wizard again choosing a different workgroup name. Then my host computer lost its internet connection and I could not see the wired connection icon in the Network Connections window.

Can someone give me some pointers on what to do to get this network going?

Thanks,

We're going to need information about how you have everything plugged in. What you should have is your dsl modem plugged into the netgear router's WAN port. Then configure the router to look at the modem for an internet connection. Then what you'll do is plug your computers into the switch ports on the router. After you've done all this see if it works. If it still doesn't then you're probably having DHCP conflicts because it's possible that both your dsl modem and your router are trying to assign IP addresses to your computers.
