i have windows xp pro with SP2 and i was wondering what is the difference between this and SP3? Would it be a good idea to update to SP3?

Yeah you should.
SP3 is the same as SP2, just a bunch of update and patches to fix potholes of the OS.
I haven't done so myself though :P
 
sp3 is pretty much a fully patched sp2. There is no significant changes unless you are a corporate user (network protection agent and black hole detection are handy)

some people have noticed a very small speed boost though.
 
main benifit of it is its handy for slipstreaming, you can combine it with your xp cd to make a new, up to date xp cd, rather than having to download hundreds of megs upon reinstall.
 
Every computer that goes out of the computer shop I work at gets SP3 installed on it.
 
most manuafctures dont do that atm though, as sp3 conflicts with an hotfix for HD audio (KB888111 says sp2 required lol) which means many intel chipsets dont get sound.

Its possible to make it work by unzipping the installer, editing the inf file, and then running it, but its a PITA. MS are releasing an updated version soon
