XP Pro x64 Hanging Inexplicably

A few days ago XP started acting up on me.

It started hanging every now and then when running the simplest of tasks. I let it go until shut down and start up started taking about 5 minutes each.

This despite running only a handful of programs after my fresh re-install a couple of months ago.

Winamp Agent
Everest Ultimate
Football Manager
Firefox
True Crypt
Realtek agent
Kaspersky Internet Security

System was running fine for a couple of months til now. I'm doing the exact same things I've been doing the past couple of months so it's not like I've been pushing my computer more than usual.

A windows repair fixed the slow shut down and start up, but the hanging persists. I've checked system logs and application logs, but haven't managed to find errors that coincide with the hanging.

Oh and I've checked my RAM with memtest 86. Clean with 7-8 runs can't remember which. Also ran a HDD diag and found not errors.

Anyone got any ideas?

How long has it been since you opened the case and blew it out?

Your heatsinks may be getting clogged with dust and causing overheating.

Also, check the link in my signature "Slow Windows?".

Just recently got it cleaned (right before format fresh reinstall). It's in pristine condition. Overheating is not an issue.

GPU - 34c maxing out at 45c
CPU - hardly ever passes 35c
In fact nothing apart from GPU ever goes above 40c.

I didn't think it was spyware or malware because there were no suspicious processes running. I completed a full scan with Kaspersky and a couple of spyware programs including Spybot, but I got no hits.

I can't explain this at all. This is the first time I've come across anything like this.

Here are my specs just in case anyone needs them

AMD 4600+ x2
MSI K9n Sli Platinum
4 GB Kingston Value RAM
Palit GeForce 7900 GS

Keep a task manager open when the system hangs, I have a feeling that 7900GS may be aging. If it is, you won't see anything unusual in task manager

Nothing weird happens that's why I couldn't explain it.. Could the 7900 really be the problem? Truth is it shouldn't be it's only a couple of years old and I've never really OC'd it. Temp was always under 45 too so I doubt it'll die out after a couple of years.

I've given up hope after an extensive search and doing everything I can.

I just installed Vista as a stop gap til windows 7 is officially launched. I've been using it for an hour, and haven't run across any problems so far.

I'll know if it's the 7900 that's the problem if Vista starts acting up.

I should be getting a new computer soon as the nforce 800 chipset comes out.

Thanks for the help guys.
