XP Problem on load

Hello,
I uninstalled Nortan System Works 2005 and restarted as asked, but when my computer turns on it goes to the XP loading screen and just freezes. When you try Safe Mode it gets stuck on a file called btkrnal.sys.

I have two hard drives, Master: Windows and some important docs, Slave: Some less important docs. I need the important docs off the Master as they are not mine (they are my dads). I can sacrafice the Slave aslong as I know I get the docs off the master.

I do not have a WinXP CD as one did not come with the computer, all that came with the computer is an Advent Recovery Disk, which would format the Master drive, which I can't do.

Please can some-one help me, I know its Christmas Day but I really need help.
Thanks, Rowan.

P.S. I'm on my mum's laptop at the moment.

this wont actually fix windows, but if you can get hold of a copy of the knoppix operating system cd (its bootable - runs straight off the disk) you should be able to bypass windows completely and get the docs that you need. you can download it off the net but its huge so if you can buy a distro somewhere it would be easier

Ok, now i've got hold of Windows XP Home disk, can that help?
I got into the Repair thingy and tryed BOOTCFG /rebuild but that didn't work.
Is there anything else i should try. Oh and by the way, the XP disk happens to be in sweedish, and i don't speak sweedish.

Thanks, Rowan.

Edit: could i use the Recovery Console instead of Knoppix to copy the files from my Master to Slave drives?
