XP Service Pack

I have my computer set to get the latest updates of windows XP automatically. Now that I have the update downloaded, when I try to install it as recommended, it crashes about 10 minutes into the installation. It then asked if I want to put back the original configuration prior to attempting to install this latest update, I then say "yes".

Any idea why I am unable to install the latest service pack?

Thanks,

Tom

First of all, don't install through recommended because you dont know what the hell goes into your computer. They always try to add some random bulls*** that screws with your computer.

To uninstall a service pack, I think you can find that under program install/uninstall. If you expand it to show your programs AND you security updates and whatnot, you will find the Service Pack that you want to uninstall.

To simplify things a little Try disabling the automatic update feature and simply click on the update option seen in the Start menu or go direct to the downloads section seen at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx

Once there you can choose the custom rather then express option and even hand pick optional software and hardware updates. For the larger redistributable package being some 316mb in size and installs from the drive once downloaded the second mirror is seen at http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-XP-SP3-Download-90001.html

Don't use the first IT developers link. The third is an even larger 522mb ISO type disk image you first burn onto a cd-r for multiple systems. If you are running a prebuilt system not a custom build the manufacturer will see workaround for problems in the faq section of their support site.
