hi,
im having problem shutting down my computer on XP. when i shut it down, it comes up with that little window 'saving your settings...', 'windows is shutting down...' etc. and then the window dissapears, and im left with just a blue background, (like windows classic default background) and my mouse cursor, which i can move around the screen freely.

I have left my computer for a few hours in this state and when i came back it still hasnt shut down.

i have tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del together to get to task manager, but that wont work because windows isnt running.

ive had to turn off my computer twice already from the power switch on the back of the PSU because of this annoying problems, and i really dont want to have to keep doing this cause i know it can make some more serious problems for the computer.

also im pretty certain that I havnt got any viruses on my PC, and so is my friend who has the same problem on his PC.
please help me cause i dont want to have to trun off the power again.
thanks, monoman

how can i find out whether i have sp2 installed or not?
Right click on My computer > Properties > General tab.

Or you can check both, Service Pack installed and BIOS version.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System information

thanks, my system summary says 'BIOS version/date - American megatrends Inc. 0707, 6/2/2005' and 'SMBIOS version - 2.3'

i have sp1 installed on here, but the microsoft website says that i cant install the sp2 because this isnt genuine windows version.

where is the power management?
i went to power options properties in control panel and i couldnt find the 'PM control by APM' option. I found an option of 'Uninterruptible Power Supply' and it says that 'the UPS service is currently stopped'

is this the same option you talked about, subtle, and should i start it?

No. That's not it.
Easy way to check it is:
Right mouse on My computer > Manage > Device Manager > View > Devices by connection.
Check if you can find ACPI there.

i found 'ACPI multiprocessor PC' option in there, what do i do now?
there was two tabs, general and driver, i dont know what any of it is.
also there was alot of sub-options under the ACPI multiprocessor PC (when you click on the '+' signs) are any of these what i need to do?
thansk

Check your BIOS settings.
Under Power should be like that (in red):

hi subtle, for some reason, i shut down my computer after that last post, and it actually shut down properly! it was still a bit slow, took about five minutes, but at least it did it:)
i dont know why, because i didnt actually touch any of the settings yet, but if i get the problem again then will try what you said.
thanks alot for your help
