XP to Vista file transfer

I just got a new laptop with vista, and i went to transfer my music files from my desktop with XP. I put my laptop on my network and went to copy the files to it. It did just fine with the older files, but it said,"you need permission to perform this action," for all of the recently added songs. Why did it do this? Why does the date added matter? Mostof all: How can i transfer these files?
Any help would be appreciated.

That will depend on what folder(s) you are copying them out of when going to transfer the files to the laptop there. If these are under your user name in the docs+settings folder Vista's new security features will hamper things. Try copying them into a new temp folder you create free of this to how that goes while running Vista.

On the system here with both versions running on two separate drives I keep a main storage folder on each as well as on a thrird drive set aside for storage/backup. That allows complete access regardless of which version is running. The other option is taking ownership in Vista. The download from the page the article is seen on here also works in XP too. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
