XP to Windows 8

I have XP and running 1 gig of ram currently. My computer generally operates very sluggishly, so I want to get more ram and Windows 8. I wanted to do these upgrades myself and I should have no problems with the ram, but I'm unsure about certain things when it comes to the OS.

I don't have an external hard drive to back everything up on, but shouldn't I just be able to put everything safely on my internal hard drive?

Do I need to uninstall XP? I don't even know if I have the original XP CD anymore.

Drivers. I need to install new drivers, but for what exactly? And where from?

Anything else I wouldn't know?

Windows 8 is still in development. I think you're referring to Windows 7. Windows 7 has higher system requirements then XP, so I don't think you'll get better performance. Reinstalling XP might help though.

You don't have to uninstall XP, but you will need the original disc. If it is a disc that came with the computer, it will likely already have the drivers you need. If it is a generic disc, than you may need to get some specific drivers depending on what hardware you have.

As for the internal hard drive, everything is already on that drive. You will need to backup your data elsewhere or it will all be erased during the reinstall process. In fact, you should backup your data somewhere else even if you decide not to reinstall. Backups are very, very important. I hope you do not have to suffer losing your data before you start backing up regularly. Backups can be on many types of storage such as external hard drives, CDs or DVDs, etc. It's recommended to have at least three copies of anything that is important. (Those copies need to be on separate pieces of hardware; three copies on the same hard drive will not help you much if that particular hard drive fails.)

Anyway...1 GB of RAM is MORE then ENOUGH to run your computer great.If your computer doesn't work well with 1 GB of RAM then upgrading your RAM will NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM!The problem is in the software part,not in the RAM (hardware) part!Also Windows 7 has higher system requirements then Windows XP so my suggestion to you is to rather completely format your entire HDD and then again install Windows XP on it,WITHOUT ANY RAM UPGRADES BECAUSE THE RAM UPGRADE WON'T HELP.

Well it depends on what you're running. You can't really expect a computer to run smoothly with 1GB of ram if you're doing things like photoshoping or video editing. 2GB of ram is a sweet spot for post PCs, unless you're doing something heavy duty.
