It get's to around 63% on XP Pro where it says "creating list of files to be copied" and it says "file name" could not be read skip or retry, retry does nothing and if I skip I get the blue screen of death. I have tried a lot of different copies, also tried Ubuntu and that freezes.

The system is new, got it off eBay.
Specs:
E6300
512MBx2
Asus P5VDC
Seagate 250GB SATA HDD
Toshiba DVDROM

The thing is I've tried 2 hard drives and my Maxtor SATA one deffinately works as I transferred stuff to it last night. I've also tried another CD ROM that I use for burning CD's and that deffinately works too. and it still fails at the same point, but the cable that connects to these does say Asus HDD cable, but I don't really think that matters.

Another thing, the PSU was fried as soon as I turned it on, but I put my PSU in and it worked fine, like it booted up no problem.

You also could have bad memory. Bad memory will act that way as well. If you have 2 sticks of memory try removing 1 and try reinstalling, if it still acts the same way remove that one and insert the other one and try again.
