i just upgraded my build with a new mobo and memory.
specs:
- asus p5n-e sli
- c2d e6420
- 2x Kingston 2GB DDR2 PC6400 800MHz CL4 HyperX Nvidia SLI Dual Channel Kit (KHX6400D2LLK2⁄2GN)
- 400 gb samsung ide hd
- 500 gb samsung sata hd
- asus geforce 7300 gt 256mb

everything but the mobo and memory are tested and fine.
ran pc check and checked to mobo for errors
and i used all of the ram sticks on different slots
tried the 0703 and 0202 bios
checked all the cables, temps and looked at every square inch of the inside of my case.

but it still gives a black screen after the part of the xp installation where it says:
"setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration"

i want to try the 0505 bios but can't load the crappy asus site or find a mirror somewhere else

does anyone have any clue about what it's problem is?

i was writing the freaking post and all in the sudden the blue screen where it is loading files of windows is showing up on the screen next to me....

just had to wait a freaking long time.....

i'll update you if everything is working correctly

Which drive are you installing XP onto there? If you are trying to install to the sata unplug the ide drive since boot information will automatically go there regardless of Windows being run on the sata. The ide drive is what the Windows installer sees first.

Another thing that will stall an installation is a bad drive. That will pull down a system fast. I've been running into this lately where people are using old drives on newer builds and XP couldn't be repaired or installed fresh while the drives could still be read from. Loading the optimized defaults in the bios can sometimes help too. A simple reset there will occasionally see things speed up.

i'm installing it to the ide drive so that's no problem.
the ide drive is about a half year old and has no problems whatsoever.
loading the defaults was the first thing i did.

right now i don't have the time and last night i didn't feel like installing it till 1h clock in the night....
i'll update you tonight.

this is really starting to get on my nerves...
i've build more then one pc and i've never seen this....

now it stops after formatting the drives and copying the windows files...
anyone has any idea as to what this is?

well i'll be damned... it was my half year old hd drive...
he could detect and so on but some faulty cluster or something
i'll sort that out later... at least it's installing the thing now :)

I loaned a drive out from an old build that I thought was done for since the cpu seemed to have been cooked and would no longer run if the fsb was set to 200 in the bios. Apparently the new battery used to replace one that quit suddenly a few months before was also weak and goofing things up. But the drive was sitting ilde and needed a home.

The problem at first was XP not installing on a Sata 1 drive where the driver disk wasn't the problem when pressing the F6 button. I loaned the drive out so that person could still see the new build there run. When XP crashed lately a repair install froze on more then one system when tried.

The second system brought to my attention also was seeing a drive go foobar! I was able to read and save files from the drives on two systems but forget installing anything onto them. The heads were toast! As soon as the Sata 1 was looked at it wasn't the F6 option but the Special devices section where you select the chipset from a list that saw XP finally go onto the intended drive on the first case.

The owner simply never motivated himself to see that done. On the second system a Hitachi 80gb primary just about a year old was seeing the same problems as the 5yr.+ old WD 120gb model. Fortunately the owner had a new WD 250gb ide drive bought for storing files. That's the new primary OS drive now.

Try copying a mountain of photos ans everything else even renaming the Windows and DocumentsandSettings folder as well as dragging the Program Files directory over while the drive was still accessible. The key term to learn? "Frequent Backups"! Data dvds can safe guard a good volume of personal data if a drive goes on you!

gotta love backups :P
i copied all of the things i wanted the backup to the second hard drive to
so i didn't lose any data.

Eventually when the prices come down on the new WD Green Power 1tb drives I'll grab one or two of those strictly for storage and backup. Even a 500gb sata fills fast when working with large video files. That will see Vista or the next OS moved from the ide I run that on leaving room on the ide channel for data rescue by slaving drives there.

The one thing done here with two OSs is keep them totally separate as stand alone. If one needs a repair or full install there's no worry about reinstalling the other. You simply unplug the other to avoid detection and boot configuraion changes.
