Xp won't shutdown or reboot?

Ok, I have scanned for virus' and malware/adware. My PC seems to be clean. For the past week, I cannot reboot or shutdown, XP hangs at the "windows is shutting down" screen. Only events I can think of around the same time this happened is: installing XP updates and my 8400GS GPU fan was making a terrible noise so I swapped it out for a 9500GT. Anything I can do to fix this? I run a HTPC and I rather not reformat.
Thanks,

Look in the event viewer for any issues. Could be application hanging or driver issue. Let us know what you find.

Try to shutdown your computer by using this program. Here is the link for the download:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/sphiuk

Just extract that file, open the folder you got and then opet the file called "PROGRAM FOR SHUTTING DOWN THE COMPUTER.exe" and try all 4 options one by one for shutting down the computer and tell me if it worked.

NOTE: Start trying those shutdown options starting from the first one!If one of those 4 options shuts down your computer then do not use the other 3!

Cheers mate!

Under applications I have a bunch of "perfnet" errors. nothing else that stands out.

Hope you don't take offense, but I do appreciate your helping...I want to run the software but can anyone else confirm this is legit (not malware). Thanks.

Do you have some sort of monitoring program installed? Or recently installed one before the issues started?

The downloaded file is a .rar file. Do you have the WinRar program installed?

Yes I extracted it....the actual program opens in a small window and I couldn't read the options, but I was able to run each option anyway to no avail. It still hangs after logging out at the "windows is shutting down" screen.

The program looks like this:

For the first option you need to select on which partition your Windows OS is installed to.

For other buttons you do not need to select the partition since its being done automatically.Try last 2 options and when the screen comes to the "Windows is shutting down...",leave it like that for about 10 minutes and see if the computer turns off.

If you CANNOT see the window of the program properly then ALSO the program won't work properly. This program requires the Microsoft .NET framework version 1.0 minumum to be installed.Anyway, install the Microsoft .NET version 2.0 which you can download from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

After the installation is complete, restart your computer and then use that program for shutting down the computer.
I repeat one more time.Try last 2 options and when the screen comes to the "Windows is shutting down...",leave it like that for about 10 minutes and see if the computer turns off.

First button is recommended if your Windows OS is working properly.Other 3 are recommended in your case, especially the last 2 buttons...

Sorry for the delay, got sidetracked. I didn't do what you stated in your last post, BUT I restored my OS partition (Acronis Image) to a working image I made in september. Guess what? It still will not shut down properly. I hope nothing got ruined on the mobo when my 8400GS fan started crapping out (I replaced the GPU with a 9500GT). Sound like a hardware issue?

Most likely a hardware issue if your image was working properly when you made it. Not sure where to tell you to start looking at.

Yea...its very hard to guess what part of the hardware might be causing this...

Well for the beginning try to test your RAM with the program called MemTest 3.8 and leave it to test your RAM for at least 24 hours and tell us if ANY errors are found...
