When I started up my computer today AVG said that. What do I do? Is avg getting rid of their free anti-virus and should I pay or get a new free one?

Simple solution. Let 7.5 upgrade 7.1 when you go to install it. 7.1 will no longer to be able to receive the newer updates that come in once or twice a week at times. They did that with 6.8 and 6.5 and 6.2 and... Besides going to Grisoft directly you'll find a good sites for sharewares and freewares that also have links for AVG as well as AdAware and others.

Simply right click on the icon in the system tray and click exit before you start up the game. If you don't autoloading with along with Windows just disable it in the starup group found in the msconfig utility.
