why don't you just install vista with a dvd drive and then remove it if you don't want a dvd drive in the machine?

some boards share the 16x bandwidth, splitting it into 2 8x slots when using 2 cards (true for both sli and crossfire). there are some boards that will run each slot at the full 16x too. in either case if you only use one card it will run at 16x speed.

that's a single core chip, and it's called speed step or something, it downclocks your cpu when it's not in use.

you can look at the details of your benchmarks and compare cpu and gpu tests against your old score to see where the problem is.

does it play dvd games or just cd games? have you tried uninstalling your drive in device manager and letting it reinstall?

use system restore and go back a week, see if the problem still exists. if so, you might have a hardware problem.

you can do blu-ray with that card. what monitor will you be using? make sure it's also hdcp compliant. the optical drive is probably the easiest thing to replace in a computer, except for maybe ram.

i got the psu from staples. it's an antec basiq 350w. the card seems to be running ok with it. i didn't try it out on any games, but i ran the windows performance thing and a 3d screensaver and it didn't crash. i guess it'll be ok.

i just got this 9500 gt 512mb today. it says minimum 400w power supply. why would newegg say 350w? i put a 350w in there. will it be ok? he doesn't really game on it, other than web based flash games and stuff. he will be watching movies on it though.

sounds like you need a new fan or a new hsf, that one is on it's way out. it should be spinning faster than that.

it should work if the board went bad but the hard drive itself is not physically damaged. just make sure to get the exact model for replacement.

if the data on your drive is important and it won't work, you can try buying an identical drive and switching the boards.
