I ran Western Digital Data Life Guard and that passed.

I bought a new drive yesterday, did a clean install of Windows, everything is running waaaaaaay smoother even with a bunch of crap running in the background.

Thats the thing with hard drives, weird things can happen even if the drive supposedly passes test from its own software. The fresh install may have helped too but who knows.
