new to building a desktop

Hello! I should start off by saying that I have never built a computer before nor do I exactly understand what each part of the computer does. With that said, I have put together a mixture of parts that I have either read online or someone has suggested to me in hopes that I would be able to put something decent together that could get the job done. Although I'm not even sure if they'd all work together, the parts I have taken a look at are:

-Intel Core i7-2600 Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
-CORSAIR XMS 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000)
-SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100283VX-2L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT)
-ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD
-Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
-Antec NSK 4482B Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 380W Power Supply
-LITE-ON DVD/CD WRITER Black SATA Model iHAS524-T98A

This is a few hundred above what I am looking to spend, however, I am looking to be able to run (not necessarily all at once) the Adobe Suite programs, CAD programs, Maya, etc, so I understand the cost will be above what I would like. So, if anyone has any suggestions or tips on where I can reduce the cost or anything at all please let me know, I am completely lost in this process so anything helps, Thanks!

Looks like it could go together alright. But i would recommend, and im sure others on the forum would, to not go with that case/psu. I would go for something like an Antec 300 and buy your own PSU. Antec and Corsair make awesome PSUs. Cases that come with pre-supplied CPUs are never great unfortunately. You also might want to look into getting a standard ATX form factor motherboard instead of a Micro ATX motherboard. You'll have far more space and slots to utilize. Hope that helps :)

Intel CPU doesn't work on AMD motherboards

You have to buy motherboard that supports LGA 1155 socket

Here's what someone else has recommended to me,

-Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
-AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX
-ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
-Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
-CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 (CMPSU-600CX) 600W ATX12V v2.3 Active PFC Power Supply
-EVGA 01G-P3-1366-TR GeForce GTX 460 SE (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
-CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9
-LG WH10LS30 10X Blu-ray Burner - LightScribe Support - Bulk - OEM

Do you guys think this would work for what I need it for?

I'm pretty sure I don't need the Blu-ray drive so I'm most likely going to take that out and get a standard dvd drive or used one or something.

Also, would I be alright with a cheaper graphics card too?

The motherboard you listed is an AMD motherboard, therefore it will not work with your i7 processor. You'll have to find another MB.

Correct. In single-threaded performance, the i5's and i7's win, in multithreaded applications they are about even.

Does that mean when multitasking they're about the same, but when doing a single task, it's worse than an i5? hmm... perhaps I should try and get a better AMD processor? or maybe change motherboards so I can get an Intel? I'm so lost lol

It relates mostly to games as the OS can multi task easily on more than one core. Most games still can't, they will only use one core of the CPU and max it out, yet if they used another 3 threads (if you had a quadcore) you could have 3x better performance in theory.

Since the AMD one is a quad core, it should be fine then for using adobe suite programs/CAD programs/Maya if i needed to run some of them simultaneously? I really like the idea of an i7, but they're so expensive

sorry to keep asking questions, but I have a hp a220n desktop from 2003 and was wondering if there was anything from it I could use like the cd drive or something?

These type video cards are more engineered for those type programs, and workstations.

nvidia.com/object/bfp_autocad_2011

amd.com/us/products/workstation/graphics/ati-firepro-3d

usa.autodesk.com

A card like one of these could fit that budget, and perhaps be more virsatile for your system.

newegg.com/Productcompare

Hmmm... I may have to figure out other parts I can cut out of the budget to get one of those...

would this:
LITE-ON DVD/CD WRITER Black SATA Model iHAS524-T98A

be able to replace this:
LG WH10LS30 10X Blu-ray Burner - LightScribe Support - Bulk - OEM

?

That looks awesome! I think I'm getting closer to making a decision =]

Just out of curiosity, where else can the price be lowered?

Also, would any of these suffice for a graphics card instead of the SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 100315L Video Card with Eyefinity?
