If you want a full security package consider Kaspersky Internet Security,Its very good.

But like Dropkick mentioned,There are alot of free antivirus out there that will do a good job aswell.

Make sure when you uninstall Norton you run this tool after just to make sure it does not leave anything behind and cause trouble.

Norton Removal tool.

There are tons of free anti-vruses out there that will do as good a job :)

AVG Free
Avira
Avast
etc...

You can find a list here: http://www.computerforum.com/166728-list-security-programs-use.html

Most people on here will reccomend that you stay away from the likes of Norton and McAfee.
Dropkick,
thanks for the reply,
why stay away from the likes of norton?
also do those programs you mentioned do everything that norton does, and would there be one that you would favour
thanks again

Norton tends to use up a lot of system resources, and costs a lot of money for the services offered.

Each of the ones I mentioned are Anti-viruses, the free versions will offer either just anti-virus protection or slightly more than that, obviously the paid versions would offer more comprehensive cover.

I personally have been an AVG fan for the past couple of years, never had a problem with them, but I am now trying out Avira and so far so good :)

Antimalware Doctor is a virus that disguises itself as legitimate antivirus program, so I hope you didn't install it on purpose.

Norton is a legal virus just like AOL.... Your better off with Kaspersky Internet Security or AVG Free, I use them both and am very pleased with there performance.

Seems like the main thing people are always saying about Norton of what a resource hog it is. While this was true in the past, since the 2009 version, Norton has been very competitive with any comparable product by any measure.

Check the testing done by AV Comparatives. Compare Symantec/Norton to what you use for impact on system resources (Performance Tests), detection of potentially unwanted applications (PUA Tests), on-demand detection of malicious software (On-Demand Comparative), on-demand detection of virus / malware (Retrospective / Proactive Tests), and malware removal tests (Removal Tests).

I've used it for years - Actually do all my benching with it running, I've been very happy with it, (just an opinion). AV Comparatives thought is was OK too,
Product of the Year 2009

how do i get rid of it

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

You are still infected please do the following.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

This is part of antimalware doctor. Malwarebytes is good but depending on the infection won't detect everything. Please run combofix and post the logfile from it. You will need to disable nortons before running combofix.
