Hey,

I have recenlty just bought a new computer, and I have still got my old one in my room. For about 4 months ive been saying that when school finishes i will do something with it. So school has finishes and i wanna get crakin with it...I wanna make it simple, I basicaly wanna format and reinstall Windows on it, but becuz ive had the pc for a long time I no longer no were the disk is to reinstall. So i was wondering what i can do??? I thought that i might be able to use the install disk i got with my new pc to put on my old pc, will this work? Or if not what else can i do?? Also once ive done it, now that microsoft no longer are giving support, how do i update the security (SP2-SP3)??

I would greatly appreciate any help!!!
Thanxxx

Actually it all depends on how old the computer is and if the install disk for the new computer are special(which means just for that computer) Most likely you would have to buy an extra copy of windows for the old computer. Because the new one is likely OEM you can't just use the license for the other puter.

^^ Ahh just run linux. Im running Puppy linux on a super old Compaq. It has 128mb ram, AMD k6@395mhz. It runs fairly good for the crappy specs that it has. LOL

you can "make" it have an internet connection.

i dont want to connect it to the internet and make it a server thing, like i said in ma last post.

What was you going to use it for?

nothing in particular i just don't want to get rid of it because it is a perfectly good pc. ill just use it for doing tests, installing stuff, modifying stuff, etc, etc. And when i start back at school il use it to do my computer work. So il install my programs i need to work and keep my backups on there and stuff like that, instead of cloggin ma new pc or ma laptop up with crap.:D:rolleyes:

^^^Are you gonna be able to do all that in linux?
I support the linux idea but when i used it there were alot of things that i wanted to do but couldnt because they were either not possible or too difficult.

Not putting down linux, just making sure that it will suit your need.s

^^ The problem with that is drivers and only being able to use IE6. Which means you cant go onto newer websites.

I cleaned out my old PC yesterday. I took everything apart and gave it a nice clean. Now I want to do something with it. It is jammpacked with sh*t. I created the thread to ask about reformatting but i cant be bothered now. Can anyone give me any ideas about what i can do with it???

  • Use it as a home server
  • use it as a media centre
  • use it for testing hardware
  • use it as a DOORSTOP !!
