i just got a 9800gtx and it is really big and it is hitting the 24 pin power connector, do i have to get a new motherboard or is there any way i can take the plastic cover off?

thanks for the help

What's the model name of your mobo? Can you post a pic?

Remove the cover over the 24 pin connection, or the heatsink/fan on the video card?

My motherboard is an - Asus PTGD1-LA (Grouper)

its on an older motherboard so the 24pin power connector is in a dumb spot but could i get it to work some how?

so there is no way i can get it to fit?

yeah i was looking at new motherboards but all i can find is ones that support ddr2 memory & i cant find any with x4 memory slots all i can find is x2. Because in my mother board as of now i have ddr1 & i use all 4 slots

i would much rather just find a way to get this one 2 fit in my board i have now and wait till i can get a new motherboard, cpu and memory

so if anyone has any ideas let me know thanks.

erm, if your motherboard only has ddr ram,.. I would just bring that 9800gtx back, and get a lower end card,. because even if you could actually fit it, not a snowball's chanse in hell that pc will even use half of that grafic's card! (sorry, but in that pc the card is just wasted)

yeah i am getting a new rig but i just got the card as of now so i would like to just mess around with it till i can get the other stuff and ddr1 to ddr2 really isnt that big of a deal it just reads it better. is there any way i could take the plastic off or something to get it to fit?

I wouldn't call major bottleneck over the speed of his RAM. Long as he has pc3200, there doesn't seem to be the biggest difference between that and the faster DDR2. And if OP is running in dual-channel, it would help to balance the lower speed with higher bandwidth, for those apps that could use more; games being one.

then please tell me, what ddr3200 compartible processor isnt a bottleneck for a 9800gtx?

you have a good point, the odds are that he has something like a P4 or an athlon 64. (i dont know which processor that the motherboard supports.)

An X2 is viable, so would be a (higher clocked) Pentium D. Stock, the X2's available aren't that impressive, I still doubt either would pose a terrible bottleneck for the GTX, which is only just about a quarter faster than your 3870.

Beside the point. I dunno what Proc he has or is able to upgrade to, nor was it a part of my RAM argument. Something to look into, obviously, but the Q of whether it's enough isn't necessarily binded to the type of RAM he has.

well, you said the type of ram doesnt matter, I say it does, with the argument that only old(er) processors use ddr ram. sorry, but I do see my reasoning still to be valid.

a high clocked pentium D is from the time of the Geforce 6 series. so yea, I do think that processor would be a bottleneck (if it is one)

also, you gotta take into account that the motherboard is from the ddr time too. so even if the processor wouldnt be a bottleneck (wich I already doubt) I doubt the motherboard would be capable of getting the ammount of data fast enough to the grafic's card. so the motherboard would most likely be a bottleneck too. (prove me wrong if you feel the need too, but I do think that putting a high end card into a 4-5 year old system isnt a good idea.
