4gb ram in vista

I heard somewere that Vista sp1 will allow you to use 4gb of ram under vista is this true or do I need to get 64bit vista. Also does all hardware support 64bit or do I need specific hardware

It just allows Windows to tell you the amount of ram you have. The limitation is still there with the 32bit.

yes, you need 64 bit compatible hardware, but it would be tough to find anything on the market today that is not, so you should be in good shape. with sp1 it will show you how much ram is installed, but it does not necessarily use it all, so if you want to use 4gb of RAM you will need 64 bit.

You'll need 64-bit Vista. All 32-bit programs are compatible with 64-bit Vista.

since when are all 32 bit programs compatible with 64 bit vista? must be magic! in case you dont believe me, look up the itunes/iphone debaucle from last year...

Since Microsoft used the 32-bit emulation tools. Which has been since it was released.

are you talking about WoW64? because if you that is what you mean, it by no means provides compatibility for all 32-bit programs on a 64 bit OS. if vista's 32 bit emulation was 100% effective, 32bit drivers would work too.

A couple of examples can be antivirus and firewalls. They need to install kernel mode drivers, and therefore special 64bit editions are needed.

You need a 64-bit CPU to run a 64-bit OS. That's all hardware requirements... pretty much all modern CPUs are 64-bit so that's something I wouldn't worry about, unless we're talking about a really old rig.
