7600GT Fan Problem

Hello everyone my problem is with a EVGA 7600GT 256mb DDR3 GPU.

My gf uses it for WoW and its fairly new about 2 months old maybe. The fan temp was getting over 60c on idle and crashed the card booting up her games. She has been having issues with it but not very often mostly when I am not home to see the actual problem.

Today I ran into it so I loaded ntune and rivatuner and for some reason neither increase her fan speed...when I go back to it its at 1% at default.
I am not sure if the fan is botched and I need to get a custom cooler or there is a problem with the PC.

She is running
2.4ghz AMD 4000+ cpu
7600GT 256mb GPU (newest drives from EVGA)
4x 1GB PC3200 Memory
1x 250gb HD
350w PSU
XP Professional

Any clues to why the fan is not working at full speeds?

Small update when playing WoW with a small 12x12 boxfan blowing directly on the card @ 57c I got artifcals the entire screenfroze with lines/boxes all over.

Artifacts @ 57c is pretty strange, my 7600gt artifacts only over 80-90c. Although it has been artifacting more often and generally acting strange lately, which leads me to believe it is on it's way out. My first though is your card is going out too.

But firstly you should check all other temps, ensure case airflow isn't boned, clean out any dust or gunk on the GPU HS/fan. One other thing, you might want to run memtest on your RAM, artifact can be caused by bad buffer caches and such. Alternatively, you can pull out and individually test each DIMM, and in different RAm slots because the physical bus iteself may be to blame.

put the boxfan so it blowing the hot air out of the case :D. Thats what i did on my friends gateway and his p.o.s. 7300le that goes to 70c without a problem

^^ Agreed Sometime blowing hot air out of the case is more effective than blowing or sucking cold air in.

Boxfan is too big for blowing the small amount of air in the case out. I don't think it would be the better airflow situation if comparing between the two.

Well its not a huge boxfan its a mini version. Works great dropped temps by 3-5c blowing directly on the card area where temps didn't drop at all on the gpu having it blow air out.

Wasn't over heating...while the fan still isn't going NEAR as fast as it should be I dunno why Rivatuner won't speed it up.

After a while I found it is either her game in dual screen mode OR the nvidia driver was corrupt I reinstalled it and no more problems. Going to try dual screen next and see if it crashes then.

If anyone has any clue why the fan is capped at such a slow speed id love to know.

Well small update after doing some reading on rivatuner I found that I was setting the profiles wrong and now the fan seems to work. highload temps seem steady @ 61c now vs always climbing.

The issue for the problem is the backside of the GT was getting untouchable hot I set a 80mm fan with some tooth picks to blow air directly on it and no crashes after 2 hours of playing.
The one thing I would like to know if its possible to increase fan speeds with rivatuner other then your GPU fan. I am hooking into my motherboard with the fan and its RPM is 1000 or so id like to increase it to 80% with rivatuner if possible how would I go about it?

my motherboard has 2 3 pins on it 1 for CPU and 2nd for the back out take fan. I am using the back fan 3 pin for this. I have better air flow with out it using my small fan.

Just disable Cool n' Quiet or whatever fan controller in your CMOS.

Well I don't want to increase my CPU fan.

I want to increase the speeds of the exhaust fan I have it directly blowing on the backside of the GPU instead tho at 80% speed but my gf won't remember to manually put it at 80% so I was hoping I could do it with rivatuner instead of using Speed Fan which doesn't seem to have a option to boot up with the PC and do it automatically.

Air flow is unaffected by doing so for the case so temps are the same.
