Hi, i would like to upgrade my HD because its only 80Gb and i cant play games or do full system scans as it will freeze which i believe is due to viruses. i would like to upgrade my RAM to make it run faster. Should i buy another IDE HD or get a SATA?

Thanks

My PC specs:
Microsoft Windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz
512 MB RAM
IDE 80Gb HD

If your system is laden with viruses, you will see the biggest performance gain by addressing that. For a free start you can try running msconfig and go to your startup. Turn off things that you think sound suspicious and then restart your pc. If you find that you no longer have something that you wanted, just go back into the startup and turn it back on.

Iv tried all of that and it doesnt seem to get any better. i was thinking if i got a external HD then i could copy all the stuff i want to keep like music, pictures, video's and all that then reformat my HD so i would end up with 2 HD's.

Your idea is sound. Go for it.
Hopefully you won't end up transferring the virus to the external drive.
It would suck getting the PC infected again after all that hard work.

how much space is left on that 80gb HD? there is a minimum empty space required for your hardware to run and for data to sometimes gets moved around. you should definitely upgrade the memory. 2gb is pretty much standard and is dirt cheap now. you can get a dual channel 2gb kit for about $40. as for HD, go for SATA because less cluttering of the wires and its just newer technology. what mobo do you have?

Before i transfer the stuff i want to keep im going to scan it first so it doesnt infect my external HD, im definatley going to get a 1gb RAM stick so ill have 1.5Gb of RAM. As for the motherboard, AWRDACPI if that means anything to you? And i only have 14Gb free space left on my HD.

Since he already has IDE drive as noted in his sig, can he run both types (IDE/SATA) in his pc? I"m looking to do a similar addition/upgrade as he is, that is add an external WD 640GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
or WD 500GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073SATA
drive in a case with the pc I have now with USB 2.0 port and then insert it into a new pc when I can build it with the newer technology. Is this something that can be done?

for the OP, we need to know what your motherboard is...... and what wattage your power supply is?

Yes. IDE and SATA can be run in the same PC. I have 2 IDE HDs and 3 SATA HDs in one PC.
Internal HD/ external HD it doesn't matter. Storing data on them works the same. If anything, you have more versatility with an external (portability).
I also have a 120gig 2.5 external that I mainly use for it's portability.

So I can just put the new hdd in a case and hook it up via usb 2.0 port and away I go?! Do I have to format it or something or is it plug and play? Thanks!
