i am also missing a harddrive and would like to get something that is "best bang for the buck"

so, can u guys maybe give me some pointers what to change etc? to make the kit perhaps cheaper but as effective as it is right now.

thank you.

Seagate hard drives are the way to go. You can get a 750GB for about $120,
a 500 GB for $84 from newegg.com. Western Digital I guess is okay, but you want to stay with Seagate.
Maxtor is now an essentially rebranded Seagate. Stay away from "excelstor" - I have never heard of it, I don't think anyone has except the people who post the products up on newegg. It might be better than Seagate, who knows, but it must be a new company and their reliability (for now) must be in question.
They might turn out to be better than all the others! Fujitsu and Samsung hard drives, I've heard, fail too quickly.

How about Kingston memory?

It's good that you are using an Asus motherboard. Those are good, but since I'm not a gamer,
I tend to pick cheaper motherboards and worry about failure prone items like the hard drive, optical drive and power supply.

Consider AMD - you'll get the same performance for less $$. With Intel, you pay for the name.
Just for what it's worth. You can stay with Intel if you want to. :)

If you do want to buy a monitor, how about Acer or NEC/Mitsubishi? I have both and have had them for 2 years - they work great.

you might want to consider a 4870, im not sure how much more they cost though, but your build looks pretty good

hes not going to be multitasking, hes mainly going to be gaming, so the e8400 should be fine for his needs

It's somewhat of a leap from the 4850 to 4870, roughly 100+ dollars. The 4850 is a great card and should be able to handle most everything now. Need more performance down the road and can just pick up another one for crossfire.
