RAID is setting up multiple HDs to appear one for a variety of reasons, such as increased reliability or performance. The difference between different RAID levels is the way the array is set up i.e. you can have two HDs act as one that's double the size of the two HDs, for increased performance, or you can mirror the HDs so no data will be lost if one of the drives fail. Most RAID levels aim for reliability & security.

Whether it's worth it or not, depends on your needs. If you need th extra security and reliability, or performance, then it might be. And yes, the drives have to be at least of identical capacity, though identical drives are usually required.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID - pretty good article on this.
