EeePC 900

I want to get an EeePC 900 but the XP version has only a 12 Gb hard drive. Can I purchase the 20 Gb Linux version and just put XP on it myself or does it have a special version of XP on it?

Yes you can. There are many different tutorials on the web on this topic.

It's not straightforward though, since there is no optical drive on the eeepc.

There are different solutions : using an external cdrom drive, copying your XP cd on a USB key or an SD card and then installing from it, etc. Just google for it

or you can get the 12gb hdd and purchase a separate SD card since the eeePC has a SD card slot if storage of files is your worry.
