swapping mobo

hey, i believe my mobo just took a sh*t, and i was wondering if i just replace it with the exact same mobo, can i just swap it out? or would i need to do something else? thanks.

If you change your motherboard you may have to reinstall/reactivate the OS

but maybe not, as you are swapping for one the same. OEM is supposed to be tied to the original hardware, so if you have to reactivate, do so by phone, and MS ask whats going on, tell them that the motherboard is faulty and has been replaced

You can just swap if out for the same one or any other one thats compatible with your parts.

In my experience though, the power supply is to blame. Get out an ohm meter and start testing. Look for low voltage. Low voltage would make it seem that the PSU is fine and the mobo is busted. If you find any, replace the PSU (they're relatively cheap) and it only takes 4 screws and a few plugs to swap out.

well, this is the issue. i turn on my pc, i get nothing on my monitor..i've tested it with other things, is working 100percent. so i turn on my monitor, fans start running, gpu fan is running, cpu fan is running, but i get nothing on my screen not one single thing..nothing about the mobo trying to boot...just black. I've narrowed it down to either the hdd, mobo, or now i guess psu. i have a display on my case that tells me when the hdd is spinning, and it normally does when i boot up, but now it says it's not spinning... when i turn the pc on..also i have no power to my front usb ports for sure, not sure about the ones directly connected to the mobo. i'm just at a loss...any help appreciated.

also..bragr..if i swap it out with a different mobo than what was previously installed, won't this cause a conflict with vista for sure...? i dont have the OS install discs anymore...just what's on the hdd...and if it sees another mobo, then what? reactivating windows won't be an issue, i just don't want to have to reinstall the OS, cause i can't..

there are some ways to reinstalling. normally you can do a repair reinstall but without disks that wont be easy..

I think if you rempve all your motherboard/chipset drivers and force windows back to using the default ones, then when you put in your new mobo, it wont get shocked and BSOD

Nope. It can't be the hdd nor the psu. It has to be the mobo. If you hear the hdd work at start up, and the about 3 seconds later you can't hear it anymore, it is the mobo. Also, the screen not showing up, and the fans and power lights still showing are typical signs of a fried mobo. Sorry for your loss.
