Practicing reformatting your computer?

I have a practice computer with XP on i can i use a different copy of XP to take off the one on the computer and then use that one to put back on?

Can your copy of XP be used for other things besides just taking off the old operating system and putting it on again. Can you do repairs etc? What kind of things can it be used for?
 
The disk has a ting in the setup called the "Recovery Console" which can be used to repair errors in the OS and boot menus. I don't know too much about it and don't use it often.

I'm pretty sure you can do a "repair". There's an option to reinstall windows without destroying your data/reformatting.
