Building Vs. Buying

I went into an outlet of Tiger Direct the other day, and I got some good advice from a guy there.

One thing he said that I wasn't sure about was that nowadays, it's cheaper to buy a pre-made machine, and just upgrade the graphics card and ram than it is to build the same quality machine, parts-wise, by yourself?

Is this true? I always heard that it was all-around cheaper to build your own PC.

pre-made is cheaper especially if there's a killer sale because they purchase parts in bulk. and some parts are 3rd grade parts (power supplies/case/etc).

but if you have some software/hardware on hand say the OS disk and hdd/burner and look for deals when they go on sale (for instance my antec 900 case was for 59.99 and power supply was for 5.99 etc)then you can actually make one even cheaper.

I take look at build -vs- buy this way :

Building = Quality
Buying = Cheaper

Quality > Cheaper Winner is Quality

In my opinion if you have quality built computer it will be cheaper in the long run.

just upgrade the graphics card and ram than it is to build the same quality machine, parts-wise, by yourself?

When you upgrade one thing, it'll lead to the next, ect ect... after all, what's the use of a HD4870 with a Celeron and a 400W PSU?

I think overall building is the best option. Not only do you get exactly what you want, but its fun too! :D

if you decide to build, maybe you could make a thread about which is better: a faster dual core or a slower quad core.

I would say it depends.
If you looking for the basic use of PC/ entertainment PC. Buying Pre-made could be cheaper.
However, If you looking for good performance gaming machine, building is better.
