Upgrading Vista help :(

I bought this Laptop & it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. I've got a flurry of questions about Operating Systems if you guys wouldn't mind answering.

1)What is the best version of Vista?
2)Tangibly speaking...what would upgrading Vista do for me? (I personally use lots of high memory taxing programs like After Effects, Photoshop etc)
3) Lastly, would upgrading delete everything on my computer?

Umm...I think those are all the questions about Vista that have been plaguing me. Anyone out there know these answers would be awesome :D
 
1) theoretically speaking Ultimate is the best. but in real world Ultimate has only the ultimate extras as a plus over Vista home premium which is so far dreamscene ( video background ) and some games and something to encrypt your files called bitlocker

1). In general you say that if you don't really know or understand the all the extras of Vista Ultimate, then chances are you don't need it. Home Basic is a bit too basic for me because I want to nice little Aero glass effects of Vista. So, I went with Home Premium. I'm a moderate computer geek and I know the Home Premium is enough for me (at least the price difference is too big to justify getting Vista Ultimate).

2). Updating to Vista won't "do anything" for you. It will be a "new experience" with more user-friendly commodities in every day use and better security. It's kind of like getting a car that drives a little nicer than your current car (but uses a lot more gas). Your current car can be doing just fine, but the new one would look nicer and have some perks that might make your driving experience more comfortable. The key thing here is that IT USES UP MORE GAS. So, if your computer is not up to speed (especially the graphic card), it might lag with Vista on it.

3). No, upgrading will not delete your personal files. However, it is always recommend to backup files that you definitely don't want to risk losing. I ALWAYS recommend setting your "My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, My Videos" folders to be located on a different hard drive or at least a different partition than the one the operating system is installed on. That way if something ever goes wrong with the OS partition or drive, you have a good chance that your personal files are safe and sound.
