Cable internet - wireless laptop

I have a desktop computer that is connected to cable internet with just a modem, I want to be able to use my internet connection on my laptop. What do I need to do??

I have a 2Wire Gateway that I used when I had DSL, can I some how use that with my cable modem or should I buy a router??

You need to buy a router that would hook up to the modem.
