Hey all I plan to buy a new hard drive. I think my "newest" drive is about 4 years old and PATA ^-^ I am fairly confident I am running on a 2mb cache :eek:

Was thinking of trying this. I am not really set on size of the HD I have about 2TB worth of hard drives I use to store stuff on.

Anyone used it or have any insight on if its good or not? Was told 32mb cache is what I should shoot for would help the performance of my PC out.
Most importantly will I get any surprises installing x64 vista on it? I never used a SATA drive so does it install like a PATA HD?

nah, get 500GB, 16MB cache, $79.99 seagate one.

16MB cache would be fine, but the higher the better, really.

Well I am more interested in performance then space. I been trying to google and most replies I see is "32mb is the best" but not why its the best. Know of any good sites?

Also I would think for a gamer higher would be better? or do games not require such cache speeds?

well 16MB would be fine for gaming, 32MB cache is good, but to costly!

So 16MB would be fine, and i recommend 16MB cache hard drives for gaming builds, so you will be fine.

Costly? 250gb 32mb cache = 79.99 same as your 500gb 16mb cache.

Question would be how much of a performance boost and is it worth it.

IS there a good site on how a HD works and what helps what?

16MB cache would be fine for gaming as i said above.

Really it isn't work it, hard drives will come down, and then 32MB will become the better option in the future, but at the moment, 16MB cache would be fine.

I'm not sure of any websites though..... google search :P
 
you just explained why it's costly. it's the same price as getting 1 WD 500gb 16MB. double the space for the same price
