I know what fishing is but what the hell is phishing? Is it pronounced the same? Since I am going to buy a desktop computer soon maybe its something that I have to worry about. I probably sound like a novice when it comes to computers and computer technology which is exactly what I am.

phishing is trying to con info from people

e.g those emails claiming to be from your bank wanting your passwords

Phising is one of the main reasons I have not upgraded to Internet Explorer 6 and am still extremely happy running IE 5 what garbage !

Hell of a example took me a second to catch that LOL.

But yeah simple stealing of your password. Its most common with sites that are big. Most common I see is rapidshare and megaupload accounts.

acctualy that happened about 1-2 years ago. a site exactly like myspace was put at that url and stole thousands of passwords another one is www.vvellsfargo.com

Phishing is just like fishing, in the sense that you are laying out bait for a fish (or a person in this case) to take a chomp at it. People will mirror websites and spoof URLs to make you think you are logging into paypal, but in the end you are actually just logging into a fake version where your login and password are now stored and your account will be used to make purchases.

Are you talking about Junk controls like Thunderbird or another proggy?
Just curious. my wife sells a lot at ebay. 3500 items maybe. though she has enough since to type it indirectly like paypal and not click on a link from email. I use a credit card on line often. Christmas, and toys for me.
Im just curious. I have and receive junk emails on a regular basis. I'll be dam if i can get rid of it. Just keeps coming. Ive cleaned ran virus (grisoft free) online scans etc. i use a laptop that is a straight shooter. I don't check email with and its for business like credit cards. that works but the other computers i can not say that. I'll be dam where its coming from.

interesting subject though since its been brought up.
everybody caught my attention.
thanks

She uses Outlook with a Gmail account. The phising emails are automatically placed into the Gmail Spam folder, so they never make it into her Outlook inbox. However, she used to use a Yahoo account, and Yahoo never recognized the fake emails as spam, so that's when we first started noticing the phishing attempts.

also if you use outlook, some type of hardwire firewall (open-source) will also scan for spam too

Phishing is like fishing a fish with tempting them with a food which they think they got it but in fact they are being trapped by a fisherman. So simply follow that trick in the internet.
Don't believe in everything you see that you know of it.
