Western Digital My Book - Delayed Write Failure

Recently, I purchased a Western Digital Premium ES 500gb external hard drive. I formatted the HD from FAT32 to NTFS, and reinstalled all the original software that shipped with the device.

Transfering files from my PC to the My Book works fine. However, when I attempt to transfer large files (usually above 2gb) from the My Book to my PC, I receive a "Delayed Write Failure" error message. The device stops responding, and I have to power it down and restart it. I am running Windows XP SP2, and Vista Ultimate. I have experienced this problem in both operating systems.

The device is connected to a USB 2.0 PCI controller card I purchased two years ago. All the ports have worked fine in the past, and I have never had problems with other peripherals connected to the port. All connections appear to be secure.

Microsoft KB article 908673 discusses this issue and is releasing a hotfix (KB908673) w/XP SP3. I found and installed the hotfix, and continue to have the same problem.

Has anyone experienced similar problems with an external hard drive? Does anyone know of a solution for this issue?

Thanks,
Michael

Does it still happen if you connect it to a USB port on the back of your PC (if you are using the front ones now)

edit: ugh why didn't someone tell me this was this old :P

Actually, I ended up replacing the PCI card mentioned in the first post, which eliminated the Delayed Write problem. Then, earlier this year, the drive basically stopped working. It would power up, but Windows could not detect the partition on the drive. I tried an eSATA cable and different USB cables to no avail. I've sent a RMA request to WD over the weekend - haven't heard from them yet.
