Is the stock Q9450 cooler enough?

Or is an aftermarket cooler a good idea? No overclocking plans. (unless the multiplier is unlocked, which I'm not sure of)

why would you overclock only if the multiplier was unlocked? thats no big deal at all. and no it is not unlocked.

and the stock cooler is fine, even to overclock a few hundred mhz.

Because I don't know how to do it otherwise and don't want to break something.

Actually the multiplier IS unlocked, but downward unlocked only. In some circumstances one may choose to lower their multiplier and increase their FSB to tweak out their systems performance. Example: I can run at either 9*450 for 4.05 GHz, or I can run 8*510 for 4.08 GHz.

it could just be loud, as far as i know, since your not going to be overclocking it should be fine, if you ever do want an unlocked multiplier, the prefix must be "qx" rather than just "q"

Most CPU's are top locked. And as long as you don't mess with the voltage, just changing the FSB can't hurt anything.

yeah i did that with my e4500.

but what we mean by unlocked is unlocked upwards, not downwards. i dont think any processors for a few generations have been locked downwards, and with a new overclocker it doesnt help anyways...
