I know nothing about power supplies. It seems like a peice I can save money on.

I just bought the beautiful antec 900 case.

This is my first build here... I plan on having a soundcard, one vid card, one, maybe two hdd's, one cd drive...i plan on learning something about overclocking in the near future...does any of this help???

what are my minimum and maximum requirments on a power supply?

well it all depends on what the parts and how many things you have... now from what you said, i would say get a 600W + power supply (PSU).

What?

Read through the guides here. The GPU and CPU are two of the most power hungry components in a rig. It would be helpful to know what you're looking at in those areas.

Myself, I would not buy anything under 600w. When you buy a power supply there are a few things to take into consideration. What ever you do, don't buy some bargin no name power supply. You don't ever want to risk your other hardware on some "great deal" power supply. I would not buy anything over 800w unless you are building a very high end system with tons of extras, I think it's a waste of money just for a mid range system and the little info we got you will build a midrange system. Anything between 600w and 800w will be perfect for the build you described.

I like modular cable support, I like to add only the cables I need and not have a bunch of extra cables tied up in the top of my case. Here are some PSU that will run your system just fine! Just a few ideas for ya. :D

OCZ GameXStream SLI 700W ATX12V for $80 after rebate(no modular cable support)

no. Dont get the cheapest one you can. Cheap "800w" psus will pit out about the same under read conditions as a good "550w" psu lol

if anything the PSU is the most important part, think of it like your heart.

So dont save money here. You will regret it in tne long run

Things to look out for are how many +12v rails does it have and how many amps is each.
Also you want to look at what cable connectors it has, and how many
Is it modular?
Does it have a good fan?
Lights?
Power factor correction and voltage regulation?

etc...

dont get a cheap psu, if you do and it takes a crap and destroys all the components along with it, then your screwed

Yeah, it also highly depends on what video card you are going to get. Almost entirely on what video card you are going to get, depending on the card. Haha, for a good card I would look around 36A total on the 12V rail. For a very good card, or for SLI that's a different story. What is your budget and what kind of video card are you looking to get? I'll try and find some good PSU's.

I guess I'll have to expand my budget for the psu now. I guess I can put out about $50 to $80 or so...

I'll be sure to attend psu 101 really soon. I'm probably gonna have to rework my budget entirely. My goal is $770'ish.

That's pretty good. I know the Antec Trio is very good, I think it goes around $70. Or at least I've seen it get that low. Do you have an idea about your video card?

I'm looking to spend around 200 on my vid card. I have no preference on ati or nvidia right now. I need to do some research...

By this winter I want to buy a second card... (This is when I setup three panels... i cant wait!)

I also want to buy a cheap sound card too.

Okay well depending on your mobo and whether it supports SLI or Crossfire, I would either get the ATI HD 4850 or the NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX+. They are priced about the same and they perform about the same. The 4850 might perform a little better, but if you have an SLI mobo I would go with the 9800GTX+.

I still need to narrow and further my search for vid cards and mobos...i know I'm doing everything out of order...

Anyway, here's an antec psu I found on newegg:

60 bucks free shipping, 500 watts, good reviews, antec brand name...I like this one. Will this suit my needs?

this is a link to a conversation where I mapped out my rough budget for each peice:

If you are looking to save some money or be able to have more flexibility in other areas of your budget, I would say cut ou the soundcard. Unless your an audiophile and looking for a highend audio card, there isnt anything on a card that you cant get onboard the motherboard. That alone will save you 50-100 bucks. And a lot of mobos that dont have onboar sound come with a soundcard. Asus does that quite often.

Its all up to you, but that will save you some money that you can pocket or splurge on a GPU or something.

does having on board sound sacrifice preformance on my computer? (sry dumb ques.)

...I need an optical connection to play through my reciever...I'm not sure if that is available onboard any mobos

I also have a coaxial connection on my reciever too...

I have no clue what either of othese connections are (coax and opt.)...I'm so confused:confused:
